🌈 Rainbow Stains on Stainless Steel Pans: What Causes Them and How to Fix
You pull your stainless pan from the cabinet and see it: swirling purple, blue, and gold on the surface.
First thought — did I ruin it?
Absolutely not. And it's removable in 5 minutes. 🌈
What Actually Causes This
That rainbow pattern is called heat tint — thermal oxidation.
It forms when stainless steel is heated at high temperatures with oxygen. This is just... cooking.
The science: Stainless steel has a thin chromium oxide layer on its surface. When heated, this layer thickens.
As it grows, it creates optical interference with light — same as soap bubbles. Different thicknesses = different colors:
🟡Gold/Yellow: ~450°F (232°C)
🟤Bronze/Brown: ~500°F (260°C)
🟣Purple: ~550°F (287°C)
🔵Blue: ~600°F (315°C)
⚠️Note: This is a cosmetic change on the surface level.
It does not affect cooking performance and, in most cases, can be fully restored to a mirror finish with proper cleaning.
How to Fix It (The 5-Minute Refresh)
Method 1: White Vinegar (For Mild Rainbow Stains)
🌈 Best for light, colorful oxidation after everyday cooking.
Pour ½ cup white vinegar into the pan.
Heat gently on the stove until warm (do not let it boil).
Pour out the vinegar and wipe the surface with a soft cloth while the pan is still warm.
Rinse with water and dry completely.
Method 2: Baking Soda Paste (For Stubborn, Darker Spots)
💪 Best for deeper stains that vinegar can't budge.
Mix baking soda and a little water to create a thick, toothpaste-like paste.
Apply the paste to the stained areas and let it sit for 5 minutes.
Scrub gently using a soft sponge, following the circular grain of your Chefwin pan.
Rinse thoroughly and dry to reveal the original shine.
What NOT to Do ⛔
No steel wool — permanently scratches
No bleach — damages the protective layer
Never against the grain — visible cross-scratches that don't come out
No Thermal Shock — never plunge a hot pan into cold wate
Prevention
Heat tint appears most when the pan preheats empty on high heat.
Using medium heat for preheat, or adding oil before the pan gets extremely hot, reduces it.
“That said — a rainbow pan just means you cooked seriously. Fix it in 5 minutes with Bar Keepers Friend.”
